CULTURAL HERITAGE
One of the key missions of the Foundation is the preservation, research and promotion of the cultural heritage of Ukraine. Our main asset is a unique collection of Ukrainian artifacts of the 18th–20th centuries, which the Foundation’s General Director, Mykola Babak, has been forming for 40 years. Since the 2000s, the collection has been regularly exhibited at leading exhibition venues, popularizing Ukrainian identity among a wide audience.
Collection composition. Today, the collection has over 15,000 exhibits, including: folk iconography, folk painted and embroidered paintings, rural photography, household items (rushnyky, ceramics, chests, clothing, etc.). Selected artifacts from the Foundation’s collection are available for viewing online in the “Collections” section of our website and on the global platform Google Arts & Culture.
Rescue activities. The collection was created through expert selection, many years of field expeditions and complex rescue operations. This allowed us to save unique artifacts from physical destruction and return them to the scientific and cultural circulation of Ukraine.
Openness to cooperation. We are continuously working on the collection and restoration of art objects. The Foundation gratefully accepts objects of Ukrainian antiquity for storage, ensuring their professional restoration, scientific research, and worthy presentation at exhibition venues.
CONTEMPORARY ART
One of the Foundation’s priority tasks is the promotion of contemporary art in Ukraine. During 2021, the Mykola Babak Foundation, on its own initiative, formed the Collection of Contemporary Art of Ukraine, which it transferred to the Cherkasy Regional Art Museum. More than 150 artists from all regions of Ukraine contributed their program works to the collection. The contemporary art objects were selected by an expert team of 21 people, including leading art historians, curators, museum staff, and scientists.
